Grade 11 Listed Church

St Boniface Church, Bonchurch, is the Victorian parish church serving the village of Bonchurch near Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. Built in 1847–48 to designs by the architect Benjamin Ferrey, it replaced the older medieval St Boniface Old Church for most regular worship while the old church remained as a historic place of prayer and occasional services. The parish church is described as a simple but substantial Norman-style building, with transepts, a short nave, chancel, vestry, north porch and bellcote. It is Grade II listed for its architectural and historic interest. St Boniface remains active as a village church with a strong musical tradition, regular Sunday worship, hospitality and community events.

Additional information

The present Victorian parish church was designed by Benjamin Ferrey and built in 1847–48 in a simple Norman style, using ashlar stone with rubble corner buttresses, a short aisleless nave, transepts, chancel, vestry, north porch, bellcote and organ chamber. Its stonework links visually with the older St Boniface Old Church nearby, whose Norman south doorway and medieval fabric help explain the long continuity of worship in Bonchurch. The interior woodwork includes screens and fittings associated with the church’s Anglo-Catholic and Tractarian tradition.
