St George's Church, Chorley. Two Hundred Years!
St. Georges Church, St. Georges Street, Chorley, Lancashire, PR7 2AA
The Church, consecrated in 1825, is noteworthy as an early example of a large Waterloo Church, for the hammer-beam roof by Rickman, Stephen Adam's internal west window and a local version of Thorvaldson's Angel Font, both dating to 1891.
In accordance with this year's theme, the main focus will be on Thomas Rickman's place in English Architecture with particular reference to the visible evidence of this church. There is a key talk on Rickman, at 1100 Friday 12th, by Dr. Bill Walker.
Some adaptation of Rickman's work came in 1891-2 with the creation of the chancel, reredos, Adam window and the splendidly sculptured marble font. The latter is the subject of the talk at 1100 Saturday 13th by David Horsfield, BSc.
Exhibitions, tailored guided tours of the church and the children's quiz, will all be available throughout.
The bell tower will be open throughout and visitors can learn about the unique history of our Ellacombe Chimes, and have the opportunity to play them and receive a certificate. On Saturday morning, 13th September there will be a special event to celebrate the Bicentennial with a continuous peal on the bells being played.
Later that day, at 1230, organist Gordon Blackledge and friends will be performing a bicentennial musical extravaganza.
Free light refreshments are provided.
