St Giles’ Church has served Ashtead for over 900 years. Join us on as we celebrate those figures who have shaped Ashtead. Explore exhibits, join a guided walk, try bell ringing, family activities, and conclude with a Festival Service of Evensong.

St Giles’ Church stands in a peaceful, wooded churchyard, approached through a striking avenue of cedar trees. At first glance it appears a quintessential country church—yet it has been a place of worship for over 900 years.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2026, we celebrate Local Histories by highlighting remarkable individuals connected to Ashtead who are laid to rest here, alongside a special Festival Service of Evensong celebrating our patron saint, Giles, with words from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer and music reflecting centuries of worship.

Those remembered in St Giles’ churchyard include photographic pioneer James Cadett, notable industrialists and community figures, and decorated servicemen such as Albert ‘Smiler’ Marshall—stories that trace Ashtead’s journey from rural village to a place shaped by innovation and industry.

You are warmly invited to explore the church and grounds from 2–7pm on Sunday 13 September:

Discover local stories through a display of historical artefacts
Join a guided walk of the historic churchyard
Try bell ringing in the 16th-century tower
Enjoy a family-friendly scavenger hunt
Attend the Special Festival Evensong at 6pm (all welcome; guest singers may join the choir by pre-booking)

Refreshments available throughout the day.

Whether drawn by local history or simply seeking a peaceful afternoon, St Giles’ offers a unique glimpse into the people and stories that have shaped Ashtead across the centuries.
