St Helen's Chapel
St Helen's Lane, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1UR
The chapel is first mentioned in documentary sources in 1076 but is likely to have originated in the Anglo-Saxon period. It is constructed on Roman foundations, part of a theatre (also open for Heritage Open Days), and the chapel has been rebuilt several times over the centuries.
The building has had various uses over the years, including a museum store in the 1990s. It is now in the care of the Greek Orthodox Church. Inside, a wonderful selection of icons or religious paintings is displayed.
