St James Church, Bulkington
St James Church, School Road, Bulkington, Bedworth, Warwickshire, CV12 9JB
St James church sits at the heart of the thriving village of Bulkington. It's story is a rich and fascinating one stretching back to Anglo-Saxon times.
Documented to have existed since 1143, since then there have been many changes, the earliest being the South arcade possibly dating from the thirteenth century.
The tower is grey sandstone built in the fifteenth century, has seen many changes the latest was the lowering of the bells and commissioning two new bells and refurbished four to replace a medieval bell that was no longer safe and now used as the bell for the church clock. The bells are regularly rung as part of the church services.
The chancel arch is Victorian and is typical of the Victorian Gothic revival.
There are many other features, including the stained glass east window depicting characters from the bible.
Some of the other features are the works of Richard Hayward whose family lived in the village. A master craftsman who designed and carved the marble font, said to be some of his finest work, along with memorials also in marble to his family.
Along the church walls are a number of other memorials, coats of arms and wooden boards depicting on one the names of those who served in the Great War and the second the names of the vicars of the parish dating from 1258.
In the churchyard adjacent to the porch is the grave of Richard and Elizabeth Johnson, aunt and uncle of George Eliot. At the base of the tower is the Bulkington War Memorial
