St James Church Swimbridge
St James Church, Swimbridge, Barnstaple, Devon, EX32 0PF
St James Church, set in the centre of the village of Swimbridge in North Devon , is said to be one of the finest in Devon.
For 47 years it was the parish church of our famous Victorian parson, Rev John Russell, "Parson Jack", who bred the first Jack Russell Terrier.
Guide tours will be running with our experienced and knowledgeable guides with recently published booklets on the church and Jack Russell on sale.
The medieval carved stone pulpit has recently been expertly restored, and with the amazing carved wooden screen and font are just some of the features of the interior.
There is a good set of six bells that ring out from the unusual lead covered spire. The ringers are led by expert ringer and teacher, Christine Ley.
Christine is always keen to introduce people of all ages to the joy of ringing in the Devon style and with a special video showing.
This is the Centenary Year of the Devon Association of Ringers.
At our Open Day she will be there to give anyone who like to have a go a chance to try ringing.
The ancient bells and Victorian clock are accessed via steep and narrow ladders and trap doors, but there will be a new video tour being shown so everyone can explore the mysteries of the spaces above, and even see our new swift nesting boxes.
Refreshments will be available in the nearby ancient Old School Room, or at The Jack Russell Inn just across the road.
The event is free , but donations will be welcome for the Devon Historic Churches Trust.
