St James, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight

St James’s Church, Yarmouth, stands at the heart of the historic harbour town and is part of the West Wight Benefice. The church has medieval origins, but earlier buildings were damaged during French raids in 1377 and 1543. The present church was largely rebuilt between 1614 and 1626 and was reconsecrated in 1626. The Holmes Chapel was added in 1692 to house the memorial to Admiral Sir Robert Holmes, Governor of the Isle of Wight, and the tower was altered in 1831 when its top stage was added by Daniel Alexander, partly as a memorial and partly to make the tower visible as a seamark. The church was further remodelled and restored during the 19th century, including work to the interior, gallery and chancel.
