St John's, Margate, is delighted to welcome visitors to remember the Reverend David Railton MC who, while vicar of St John's 100 years ago, submitted proposals for the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey.

Friday 12th September 2025
Visit the church between 10am to 5pm - enjoy our model of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and the displays of knitted and crochet poppies made by our craft team.

Refreshments available in our pop up cafe.

Make a "Peace Dove" with your children/grandchildren that will include a prayer for peace. All materials provided.

Saturday 13th September 2025

David Lammler, our gifted organist, will entertain visitors with organ interludes.

A special welcome for those taking part in the Kent Sponsored Ride and Stride to raise money for their own church and the Kent Churches Trust.

Directions:
The Thanet Loop Bus stops outside the church in Churchfield Place. The church can be approached on foot by walking up Margate High Street from the Old Town/Harbour. There is limited parking available for cars by driving into the churchyard from Churchfield Place. Please note that this route is one way, with an exit onto Victoria Road at the opposite end of the churchyard, just past St John's Community Centre. Cars must not be parked on grass areas within the churchyard (as there are graves underneath). There is one hour parking in surrounding roads.

Accessibility details

Anyone walking through the churchyard and the church should note that the floor can be a little uneven in places, as is to be expected from an historical site.

Additional information

On Sunday the 14th September the church is open to Heritage visitors from 12 noon to 2.30pm (ie. between the 10.30am Morning Service and the 3pm Special Service commemorating the Reverend David Railton MC. Visitors are, of course, most welcome to join either of these services but please note that you will not be able to look around the church while a service is in progress.
