This remarkable private chapel was built due to the inspiration of Louisa Harris, just over a hundred years ago, to the designs of the leading Arts and Crafts architect Sir Guy Dawber, one of the founders of the CPRE.
Louisa created this beautiful chapel close to her own house, 'The Rocks' - indeed, a picturesque path winds its way from the house to the chapel. She assembled a glittering array of artists to realise her dream. Louis Davis - often called the last of the Pre-Raphaelites - designed the glass at the east end and George Bankart the barrel-vaulted plaster ceiling - lookout for the tiny birds flitting across the ceiling through the roses and brambles. The chapel was built over a well that can be picked out on the roadside and a sweet oriel window offers sweeping views across the Derwent Valley. The Chapel is Grade II* listed. It was declared redundant in 2002 and passed to the Friends of Friendless Churches for protection.
The chapel will be open for self-guided tours and printed leaflets will be available for visitors to take away. Volunteers will also be on hand to talk to visitors about this spectacular building!

Accessibility details
It is advisable to park at the end of St John's Road and walk up to the church, which is at the top of a short but steep narrow hill. There is no turning room at the top of the hill. Visitors are asked to stay away from the edge of the churchyard where there is a long drop to the road.
