Winchester's oldest parish church, St John's, built in the 12th century, is situated on the ancient Pilgrim's Way between Winchester and Canterbury. Described by Sir John Betjeman as ‘a gem'. Come and admire its medieval simplicity and beauty.

St John's is a Grade I listed building mentioned by Pevsner. It is situated in the middle of what was previously the site of a 4th century Romano-British cemetery. Among our many treasures are 13th century wall paintings, including a depiction of the devil's head, huge medieval tie beams forming part of the roof structure and a large and intricate south window with surviving 13th century stonework. Stewards will be available to talk about the history of the church and printed guides will be available.

During this year's event, we will be displaying our restored Elizabethan Turret Clock. After many years in storage the clock is now restored and on public display. Unusually the clock has no face, but would have struck the hours and the mechanism will be demonstrated during the day. There will also be a brief introduction to the clock’s history accompanied by slides at 11am and 3pm on Saturday 12th September and at 3pm on Sunday 13th September.

During both days members of the Winchester School of Bell Ringing will be in attendance and will be demonstrating handbell ringing at 12 noon and 2pm on Saturday 12th September and at 2pm on Sunday 12th September. Come and talk to them about their craft and have a go yourself!
