St John the Evangelist, Friern Barnet Parish Church
St John the Evangelist, Friern Barnet Road, Friern Barnet, London, Greater London, N11 3EQ
Architecturally this historic church has a number of unique features. It is constructed entirely of stone, with fine columns and vaulting extending from the East end Apse, Sanctuary and Chancel, to the Clerestoreyed Nave and side Aisles with a triumphant Narthax at the West end. Of special merit is the exquisite Lady Chapel, the church in miniature. Of particular interest is the composition of the beautiful east-end Apse and Chancel, which was inspired by the 13th century Cistercian Abbey Church at Heisterbach in Germany. St John's Church represents a unique collaboration between father and son, with Frank Pearson finally completing the church building project in 1911, following his father's death. The fine stained glass is by Clayton and Bell, who carried out extensive work at the Palace of Westminster and Westminster Abbey.
The organ was built in 1896 by the renowned Father Henry Willis (who also made the organ for the Royal Albert Hall) and is listed Grade 1 as an historic instrument.
