Friends of Elswick Cemeteries invite you to take a tour of Newcastle's largest cemetery, which opened in 1857, the burial place of many historic local characters and with fabulous views.

Covering 28 acres, over 105,000 people have been buried here since it opened over 160 years ago to replace the graveyard of St Johns Church on Grainger Street, when a major cholera epidemic closed all the city centre graveyards. Featuring a Jewish Cemetery, Grade ll listed entrance arch, lodges, chapels and Mather tomb; several of Tyneside's leading industrialists are buried here, alongside victims of the Montagu Pit disaster. A haven a wildlife, you may spot the parakeets. Meet your guide Tony in front of the Central Chapels.
