Covering 28 acres, over 105,000 people have been buried here since it opened over 160 years ago to replace the graveyard of St Johns Church on Grainger Street, when a major cholera epidemic closed all the city centre graveyards. Featuring a Jewish Cemetery, Grade ll listed entrance arch, lodges, chapels and Mather tomb; several of Tyneside's leading industrialists are buried here, alongside victims of the Montagu Pit disaster. A haven a wildlife, you may spot the parakeets. The chapels will be opened especially for visitors.
