St Luke's Church, Cheltenham
St Lukes Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL53 7JJ
St Luke's church, designed by F.W. Ordish, was consecrated in 1854. Funds were depleted resulting in a reduced spire. The chancel was enlarged in 1866 by John Middleton. The church has impressive stained glass windows, mosaics, wood carvings and relics of the demolished St John's church. A self-guided information sheet is available. The west gallery has been used as the artist-in-residence studio since 2003 and visitors will view the studio and experience the architecture of the church from this higher level as part of the guided tour.
The guided tour will also include the other two galleries and the clock tower containing a turret clock is available for those who are fit to manage 50 steps of the spiral staircase. Enjoy a family workshop making small stained glass window bookmarks or cards or listen to the talk on the seven stained glass windows within the church. This will be followed by the showing of an art installation of the angels in the church projected on the arch leading into the sanctuary where the actual angels can be found. The Victorian church’s Gothic Revival architecture will be highlighted and lit only by the projection.
