St Luke's Church, Cheltenham
St Luke's Church, St Lukes Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, GL53 7JJ
St Luke's church, designed by F.W. Ordish, was consecrated in 1854. Funds were depleted resulting in a reduced spire. The chancel was enlarged in 1866 by John Middleton. The church has impressive stained glass windows, mosaics, wood carvings and relics of the demolished St John's church. A self-guided information sheet is available. The west gallery has been used as the artist-in-residence studio since 2003, and visitors will view the studio and experience the architecture of the church from this higher level as part of the guided tours on Saturday, 19 September.
The guided tours include the clock tower containing a Victorian turret clock available to view for those who are fit to manage 50 steps of the spiral staircase. There will be an illustrated display providing information on the men of the parish who served in WWI projected on the two large screens in the front of the church.
Visitors are invited to join two talks on Wednesday, 16 September, the first on Cheltenham Women in WWI and the second on Catherine Parr. Afternoon tea will be served between the talks.
