St Martins Church, Salisbury

St Martin's is the Parish Church of Sarum St Martin. It predates its famous neighbour Salisbury Cathedral by more than a century, but is itself relatively unknown. An opportunity to wander round this beautiful building at your leisure and learn something of it's past.

Find out about the exciting World of Traditional English Bellringing and how bells are rung. The Tower has a fine peal of eight bells cast between 1582 and 1990, many from the Salisbury Foundry which closed in 1731. There will be a display stand, ringing demos and even an opportunity to have-a-go under the supervision an experienced teacher!

Enjoy music played on recorder and our wonderful Heritage Organ (Hills 1869) whilst enjoying tea and homemade cake. Visiting organists are welcome to try the organ.

We regret for safety reasons visitors cannot climb up to the belfry, but we are excited to have a 17th century bell in the ringing room for you to see.

Directions:

The Church is close to the College Roundabout where the A36 Southampton Road joins the Salisbury Ring Road, but is hidden by the Wiltshire College & University Centre. Please note, there is no right hand turn into Tolgate Road from the A36. There is a pedestrian underpass between St Anne's Street and St Martin's Church Street, which is convenient if walking to/from the Cathedral via Exeter Street Gate.

Accessibility details

The majority of the church is wheelchair accessible and there is an accessible toilet. Access to the tower is down a short, easy staircase with a handrail. This isn't suitable for a ramp, but visitors who can't access the tower can still see some of the ringing from the refreshment area. Please contact the organiser if you need disabled parking.

Parking There is a small church carpark next to the Church. Free on-street parking includes Tolgate Road and Fowlers Hill (2 hr max). Free unlimited parking in Churchill Gardens carpark, opposite Wiltshire College and University Centre on the A36 Southampton Rd. The entrance to the carpark is at the College's light-controlled pedestrian crossing, and is indicated by a disabled WC sign. Walk through the College carpark to the churchyard. The nearest city carpark is Culver Street multi-storey pay and display (5 min walk).
