St Mary's Church, Attenborough
St. Mary's Church, Church Lane, Attenborough, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, NG9 6AS
Records show that the first chapel on this site was established in AD 964. The oldest surviving feature of the present church is a blocked 12th-century doorway, while much of the building you see today was constructed over the following 300 years. Built from durable millstone grit—probably transported along the rivers from Derbyshire—the church was enlarged and rebuilt during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, creating the impressive structure that stands here today.
Step inside to discover distinctive carved stone figures crowning several of the nave columns, together with a collection of memorials that reflect centuries of local history and community life.
The churchyard is also a place of remembrance. It contains the burial place of many of the more than 130 victims of the 1918 Chilwell Shell Filling Factory explosion, one of the UK's worst wartime industrial disasters. A memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives was unveiled in 2018 and can be seen within the church grounds.
