St. Mary's Church Eversley
St. Mary's Church, Church Road, Eversley, Hampshire, RG27 0PX
This hidden gem of a church lies off a main road on the Hampshire-Berkshire border, and it's community and congregations love to open up and celebrate it's hidden features for Heritage Open Days. The earliest item on show is a "Sarsen Stone" from the last ice age, but it's visible Christian history and architectural story start with a medieval piscena and a Tudor Chancel. A Georgian redesign may, or may not, be the responsibility of Local resident and 18th century architect John James (also responsible for the Royal Naval Hospital at Greenwich). We only have a monumental inscription to show the connection, so if you've an interest in architectural history you'd be particularly welcome! Other fascinating features include 19th Century lath and plaster partition which gives a view of the chancel and is adorned by angels who had a chequered history, being painted over for part of their life! Late 19th Century changes to the roof line by the architect G.F. Bodley were made to honour the Rector and author Rev'd Charles Kingsley after his death, but may have done away with some of the features that supposedly helped his passion for oratory!
The current worshipping community love to welcome all who want to delve into our historic past, as we work to continue to both preserve this quirky gem of a church and continue God's work of loving service to the local community.
