St Mary's is a relatively rare example of a Church of England Parish Church. Not many churches were built in the early Georgian period, so it is a fine example of a fairly rare style of church architecture.

St Mary's is an unusual church, having been built in 1723. In a recent renovation, it was re-painted in what are believed to be the original interior colours, so giving a good impression of how a church of that period would have looked. Other repairs and renovations have been done to the interior in time for the tercentenary, and the new memorial garden in the churchyard greatly improves the appearance of the church, so that it is looking its best.

Prior to the building of the new church, the parish church was the former Abbey church. Little now survives of Kingswood Abbey, but its fine gatehouse is managed by English Heritage. It stands close to the church, and will be open at the same time as the church, so a single visit can take in both sites.

The church is open both days, but please note that the normal Sunday service will be happening 1100-1200 on the Sunday. You are welcome to join us for that, but it's not the best time for viewing the exhibition.
