St. Mary's Parish Church, West Horsley
St. Mary's Parish Church, Epsom Road, West Horsley, Surrey, KT24 6LQ
'This lovely church in ancient witness stands
Upon its lonely knoll beside The Way;
Some Saxon serf here kneltt and cupp'd his hands;
A Norman noble too, in knight's array.'
St. Mary's Church, West Horsley was built in 1030 AD by Thored, a Christian Dane, who was Thane of the Manor of 'Horselege.' After 1066, a Norman family became liege lords, and one, Hugh de Windsor-FitzOtha, around the end of the 12th century, commissioned a chancel, magnificent wall paintings, and stained-glass windows. The Lords of the Manor were patrons of St. Mary's over the centuries and contributed to the rich history and architecture of the building. One intriguing piece of history is the head of Sir Walter Raleigh, which is buried in the Nicholas Chapel.
Guides will be on site to talk about the history, architecture, stained glass and wall paintings. A guide will also be on site to provide insight into those buried in the churchyard, which includes the families of farmers, weavers and other West Horsley villagers – as well as the head of Sir Walter Raleigh. There will also be a Children's Quiz on the Church available.
