St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church: Pugin, Pipes and Parish Life

Discover the history, craftsmanship and living heritage of St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, a striking Grade II-listed building designed by celebrated Gothic Revival architect E. W. Pugin.
The church will open its doors for visitors to explore its richly decorated interior, intricate wall paintings and colourful stained glass. Guided tours will reveal more about the building’s architecture, spiritual heritage and enduring place within the story of Brierley Hill.
Throughout the day, visitors can explore historic displays in the church and Parish Centre, follow the popular mouse trail and enjoy stained-glass-inspired colouring activities.
Refreshments and homemade cake will be available throughout the event. Hot pork cobs will also be served between 11am and 1pm on a first-come, first-served basis.
Programme
11am to 11.30am: Harp performance
Helen Barley will perform on the harp, creating a beautiful musical setting in which to experience the historic church interior.
11.30am to 12.30pm: Organ music and choir loft visit
Organist Richard James will play the church organ. Visitors will be invited to climb to the choir loft, see the instrument at close quarters and enjoy its sound from a rarely seen part of the church.
Access to the choir loft is via very steep steps. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent.
12 noon to 12.30pm: Try the Little Harps
Visit the Parish Centre for an opportunity to try Helen’s “Little Harps” for yourself.

The entrances facing the High Street and immediately to the left of the church involve steps. Wheelchair and pushchair access to the church is available through the Sacristy Door at the far left-hand side of the building. This entrance will be clearly signposted. A wheelchair and pushchair accessible ramp provides access to the Parish Centre and toilets, where refreshments and the Little Harps activity will take place. Access to the choir loft involves very steep steps. Children under 16 may only access the loft when accompanied by a parent. A small car park is available for disabled parking.
