The Church has existed as far as can be discerned sometime around the 7th Century. That early building does not exist today. Archaeological excavations inside the Church carried out in 1978 identified at least three prior evolutions of the church before the building of today began its life in the early 13th Century.
Historians believe Aylesbury to have been a Minster Church when it was first constructed in the 7th Century. This was a time before the concept of a ‘Parish’ existed. A Minster is understood to be a community of priests, nuns, and/or monks living together and worshipping together. More than that the Minster would act as a point to spread the message of the Gospel to the area. It would also act in an administrative function to govern and control the area in which it operated.
