St Marys Bell Tower, Tickhill
St Mary's Church, Tickhill, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN11 9LZ
The journey begins with the climb of 94 uneven steps leading to the ringing room, where generations of ringers have gathered to continue a tradition that stretches back hundreds of years. Visitors will hear about the history of bell ringing, how it developed in English churches, and the important role it still plays in marking celebrations, weddings, remembrance, and community events today.
The visit will also include an introduction to some of the traditional rules and etiquette of bell ringing — from safety in the tower to the teamwork and concentration needed to ring successfully as a band.
Visitors will be able to see the church clock and carillon mechanism up close and learn how they have helped keep time and music alive in Tickhill for many years.
For the more adventurous, guided access will also be available higher in the tower to visit the bells themselves. This year is especially significant as three of the bells celebrate their 300th anniversary, providing a rare opportunity to stand beside these remarkable pieces of history and hear the stories they carry through the centuries.
Whether you are interested in local history, engineering, music, or simply enjoy discovering hidden parts of historic buildings, St Mary’s Tower offers a unique glimpse into an enduring tradition at the heart of Tickhill life.
