St Mary's Bitton - stories and objects
Church Road, Bitton, Bitton, Gloucestershire, BS30 6LJ
St Mary’s is a beautiful church, thirteenth century in appearance but of Saxon origin on a former Roman site. Why was this huge church built in this small village and why at the end of the tenth century was a huge Rood- a statue of Christ on the Cross - erected here?
Over the course of 90 minutes, and in six different locations around the church, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy not just a guided tour, but a journey through the extraordinary history of this church through its people, their connections and some objects that are not usually on public view, including parts of the Saxon Rood, an Elizabethan communion cup and the famous Ellacombe chimes. It is the story of the church and how it has weathered the changes in belief, doctrine and society in a history of well over a thousand years.
