Explore St Matthew’s Community Enterprise Centre on a guided Heritage Open Days tour. Discover its WWI memorial window, Alec Gill Gallery and historic tower, hear about Giroscope’s 40-year story and new photography competition, and enjoy refreshments

This year marks Giroscope’s 40th anniversary: four decades of community-led action in West Hull. Our latest regeneration project St Matthew’s Community Enterprise Centre, is where heritage, new ideas and working lives meet.

Discover one of West Hull’s great landmarks from the inside. For Heritage Open Days, Giroscope is opening St Matthew’s Community Enterprise Centre for hour-long guided tours on Saturdays 12 and 19 September, between 11 am and 3 pm.

Built as a parish church and consecrated in 1870, Grade II listed St Matthew’s is a striking survivor of Victorian Hull. Its broach spire remains a local landmark, while Giroscope’s conversion has given the building a new future as a place for enterprise, community activity and connection.

Tours will include the magnificent 1922 First World War memorial stained-glass window by John Hardman & Co., created in memory of local men who served and died, as well as the Alec Gill Photography Gallery and a visit to the first floor of the tower. We’ll also introduce the new Alec Gill and Giroscope International Photography Competition. Open to photographers around the world, its first theme is HOME, with shortlisted and winning work due to be exhibited at St Matthew’s in 2027.

You’ll hear how this historic building is now used for coworking, offices, meetings, events and community activity, and find out how you can use the space. Refreshments will be served.
