Discover the fascinating world of bell ringing at St. Nicholas Church in Elmdon as part of Heritage Open Days. Visitors can try their hand on a specially acquired mini ring, watch demonstrations and take a tour up to the ringing chamber.

Step inside the historic St. Nicholas Church—the furthest outpost of the Diocese of Chelmsford—to experience a uniquely English skill. Since the church's traditional bells are temporarily silent, a mobile mini ring has been brought in specifically for this afternoon, offering a unique hands-on opportunity for the community.

Whether you are curious about the mechanics of the craft or want to try pulling a rope yourself, qualified experts from the Association of Ringing Teachers (ART) will be on-site to guide you safely through the basics. Alongside interactive trials, experienced ringers will showcase the intricate, rhythmic art of change ringing through live demonstrations.

For the adventurous, the event offers exclusive access to the bell tower. The door to the bell-ringing chamber will be opened to the public for a rare look behind the scenes.

⚠️ Accessibility Note: Accessing the ringing chamber requires climbing a narrow, steep spiral staircase, which may be challenging for those with limited mobility.
