St Oswalds Church Thornton History and Heritage
St Oswald's Church, New Road, Thornton in Lonsdale, Carnforth, North Yorkshire, LA6 3PB
St Oswald's, originally a Norman parish church though with a nave and chancel remodelled in the nineteenth century (and subsequently restored by Paley and Austin after a fire in 1933), has been home to the lives of Thornton residents for centuries. Arthur Conan Doyle was married here and Turner sketched in the parish, but we also hold the stories of the local Redmayne family of Thornton Hall and the people of several distinct communities: Westhouse, Masongill and Ireby. A new display celebrating these will be created for the weekend; parish registers and historic Bibles will be available to see; and tours of the church and churchyard will celebrate the diversity of life (and death) in the parish. East window of stained glass by H Wilkinson.
