ST OSWALDS CHURCH, WINWICK,
Golborne Road, Winwick, Warrington, Cheshire, WA2 8LF
In 2025 the Heritage Open Days in the medieval and historic St Oswald's Church, Winwick, Warrington will be welcoming The Battle of Winwick Society.
On 19th August 1648, a decisive battle took place in the English Civil War at Winwick, known as the battle of Red Bank. Fought with muskets and pikes in the fields bordering Winwick and St Oswald's church.
This was a battle of national significance in the English Civil War and was one of two major battles which saw the final defeat of King Charles I and his supporters. Historic St Oswald's church stands in the battlefield and was used as a refuge and a prison for hundreds of Scottish troops fleeing the conflict.
Come and see a living history event as members of the Battle of Winwick Society and a team of re-enactors complete with uniforms, weapons and muskets display their equipment and blank fire some of their muskets. There will be history talks over the weekend and a battlefield walk on the final afternoon.
Although the church will be displaying items from the English civil war, the Heritage open days are not all about the battle. You can immerse yourself in the rich history of the 14th century St Oswald's church. There is lots to see. And if you prefer modern history, come and see a copy of the wedding certificate and photographs of Captain Edward Smith of the Titanic when he married Sarah Pennington in St Oswald's in 1887.
