St Paul’s Church, Town Centre, Harlow

St Paul’s church was built in the late 1950’s and was designed by Derrick Humphreys. The pews and fittings were largely designed by Reginal Hurst.
One of the major features is the mosaic by John Piper (see also Coventry Cathedral), featuring Christ and two disciples on the road to Emmaus. This can be seen on the wall behind the alter and is over 18 feet high.
Among other pieces of interest are a reproduction of Michelangelo’s ‘Virgin of Bruges’ and Ruszkowski’s ‘Crucifixion’.
The fittings in themselves are also interesting and it is fascinating to discover the origin of some of the fixtures, including the organ and bells.

Directions:

St Paul’s church is located in the centre of Harlow, next to the Playhouse and Harvey Centre. Due to regeneration works in this area it is not possible to approach the church by car but it can be accessed from the Harvey Centre car park by a short walk. Parking at the Water Gardens car park is further away, but more accessible for wheelchairs.

There is no parking at the church. The nearest car parks are the Harvey centre and the water gardens. The area around the church is undergoing major regeneration work so some care is needed.
