St Paul's is a Roman Catholic church originally constructed for the Church of England 180 years ago. It is now a grade II listed building, and is worth a visit for its splendid interior. It will open from 1030 until 1600 on Saturday 20th September.

St Paul's Roman Catholic church was designed by Anthony Salvin in 1845-6. It was funded largely by the 3rd Duke of Northumberland and a monument to him was installed in the church in 1847, designed by sculptor J E Carew. The magnificent stained glass window depicting St Paul and Barnabas preaching in Antioch, was completed in 1856 designed by William Dyce. When the church changed denomination in 1982, some features were transferred from the previous Catholic church, St Mary’s in Bailiffgate which is now a museum. The church has a reredos behind the Lady Altar portraying the northern saints. Latest editions are two icons of Jesus Christ and St Aiden by local artist Sally Williams.
