St Peter and St Paul Albury Old Saxon Church
St Peter and St Paul Albury, Old Parish Church, Albury Park, New Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU5 9BB
Designed by the renowned Victorian architect Augustus Welby Pugin, it is lavishly decorated, with stained glass, painted walls and ceiling and a magnificent tiled floor, a classic example of Pugin’s eye for gothic design. The church has been featured in films and television, including the film Four Weddings and a Funeral.
The Friends of the Old Saxon Church have recently finished an extensive £40k conservation / restoration programme in the Drummond Chapel. A virtual tour can be seen on the website www.alburyoldsaxonchurch.org.
This year Surrey Archaeological Society will have a display of artefacts from their current excavations and survey of the deserted medieval settlement in Albury Park displaced in the early 19th century. From Roman brooches and Medieval jetons to Tudor pottery and Georgian glass bottles, visitors are welcome to come and view a taster of what has been discovered to date.
