St Peter's Church, Conisbrough Open Day

St. Peter's Church has been the meeting place of Christian believers since 750AD and is the oldest functioning building in South Yorkshire. Its medieval heritage is evident as soon as you walk into the church, with artefacts such as a 12th-Century tomb chest featured inside.

There is visible evidence that the church has an Anglo-Saxon core, perhaps dating from the eighth century, although it was enlarged by the Normans and then again several centuries later. Conisbrough was like Ecclesfield (now in Sheffield) and Dewsbury (in West Yorkshire), a mission church. It had at least eight of dependent churches, which in the Middle Ages became separate parishes. In the Doncaster area, these included Armthorpe, Braithwell, Fishlake, Hatfield, Kirk Sandall and Thorne.

Come and see this historic building, there will be in depth information booklets about the church available for visitors and C.R.A.G.S.(Conisbrough Research and Archaeology Group) will be there with information boards with displays of some of the research done on the church and graveyard. Weather permitting there will be tours of the Church Yard where there are early medieval grave slabs.

The "Come for Prayers Team" will be available for anyone requiring a quiet time or a prayer.

Light refreshments will be available plus a church craft stall selling homemade knitted goods.
