  • 13 Sep 2025
  • In person

St Peter's church open for visiting from 10.00-12.00, with the churchyard memorial records available. There will be an illustrated talk at 10.30 by Jean Stokes on the architecture of the church, "Why French Gothic?" Refreshments before & after.

In 1867 Mr Charles Hodgson Fowler designed St Peter's Church in Harton Village using the French Gothic style.
This hour-long fully illustrated talk will aim to answer the question why? Why, in this little rural village of Harton with a few houses, two pubs, one blacksmith, one shop and four farms, most belonging to the Georgian period, did he decide to build a French Gothic style parish church?
Along the way we shall investigate the career of Mr Fowler and the impetus behind the building of this little Victorian church.

Refreshments will be available, along with churchyard monument information.
