St Peters Church Barnburgh

The church was built in 1150 with changes made in 1330, 1410 and 1859, The font is thought to be original. It also has the remains of a stone Saxon cross inside plus a stone coffin thought to be Norman outside. It has 2 chantry chapels. 1 each for the Cresacre's and the Bella Aqua's. The base of the 3 storey tower is thought to be original. The church houses a fine example of a wooden effigy who is thought to be Sir Thomas Cresacre. The legend centres on Sir Percival Cresacre who was chased by a wild cat and they killed each other in the church porch. . Among the list of former rectors is George Mompesson who was the son of William Mompesson from Eyam. There is also a piscina in the Cresacre chantry and a reliquary. The local history group will host a display of village life and the church through photos and information Other sites of interest in the village are the medieval Dovecote (also open on this day) and the Grade 2 listed 1930's public house, The Coach and Horses. Refreshments and toilet facilities will be available in the Parochial Hall
