St Peter's Church, Colchester
St Peter's Church, North Hill, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1DZ
Marvel at the design and construction of the medieval door (imagine those who would have walked through it in the late 1200s.) See the plaque of the martyrs of the 1550s (those who chose the flames rather than to deny their God) Spot the musket damage to the pillars (what was it like for the Royalists under siege here in 1648?) See where Queen Caroline lay in her coffin in 1821 (and picture the extraordinary riot going on around her!) Climb up to the pulpit, admire the parachute regiments' Colours, marvel at the Baltic Fir ceiling, listen out for the bells, find the dragons... Free booklets are available on entrance to help you discover the history and heritage of this remarkable building.
...We hope you will also enjoy the warmth and welcome of our church family who are delighted to offer refreshments, a family-friendly treasure trail, children's craft activities, and a table sale of plants and home-made goods.

St Peter's has many interesting things to look at both outside and in, but please be aware that the floors inside the building are uneven. We are sorry that the churchyard is inaccessible for those in wheelchairs or who struggle with mobility issues.
The Vicar will be on hand throughout the Heritage Open Days. An Oxford History graduate himself, he will be delighted tell you more about the church; just ask on the day if you would like a personalised tour.
