Hear about St Stephen’s illustrious past and its optimistic future with guided tours of this Grade II* Victorian Gothic Revival Church. Your guide will regale you with stories of the early challenges of this notable Bath church.

St Stephen’s Church, Bath stands proud on Bath’s northern skyline. Floodlit at night, and visible for miles around, it’s appropriately known as the Beacon of Lansdown. An outstanding example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture, the church originally marked the boundary of the city’s growth up the northern city slopes. The founding wealthy incumbents left a legacy of the highest quality interior details – stained glass windows by all the best-known Victorian experts, glowing opus sectile carved tiles, an ornately carved font by Cundy, Westminster Abbey’s mason, and a grand alabaster and Siena marble pulpit. Come and join a guided tour by art historian and author, Carolyn Cowley. Hear more of these glories, together with lively stories of early Diocesan disagreements which left St Stephen’s unconsecrated for over 40 years, the history of the early incumbents and the lives of the worshippers of St Stephen’s through to future plans for the revival and restoration of this Beacon of Lansdown.
Family eco and history self-guided trails are also available.
