Grade 1 Listed Church

St Thomas, Newport, also known as Newport Minster or the Minster Church of St Thomas, is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church in St Thomas’ Square at the heart of Newport, Isle of Wight. There has been a church on or near this central site for well over 800 years, with the original dedication associated with St Thomas Becket after his canonisation in the 12th century. Following the Reformation, the dedication became associated with St Thomas the Apostle, and when the church was rebuilt in 1854–1855 the foundation stone dedicated it jointly to both saints. The present building was designed by Samuel Whitfield Daukes in a Decorated Gothic style with Pugin influence, retaining important historic fittings from the earlier church, including a 1636 font, pulpit and reading desk, and the monument to Sir Edward Horsey. In the new church was erected the memorial to Princess Elizabeth, daughter of Charles I, and royal memorials connected with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
