Steel Town – Stocksbridge Heritage Walk
Fox Valley Way, Stocksbridge, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S36 2AB
Meet at the fountains in Fox Valley at 2pm for a guided walk around the steel town of Stocksbridge in the beautiful Little Don valley. The town has grown around the steelworks of Samuel Fox, founded in 1842, and many of the buildings are his legacy - he was made prosperous initially through his wire-drawing skills and the production of umbrella frames and crinoline wire. You will see the early steelworks buildings and hear more about how the business developed and created the town. We will then follow the high street to find out more about buildings you may have passed on the bus and know nothing about - the town hall and Grade II listed clock-tower, the churches and schools built by Fox and the former cinema. We will share more stories about the places and people around the valley.
The route is all on pavements and mostly level, other than a climb up the hill to the clock tower, which is optional. Some of the pavements are quite narrow, and the main road can be busy.
