Follow in the footsteps of George Stephenson as we explore the area in and around the historic Hetton Colliery Railway - the world's first purpose built for steam haulage!

Join us for a fascinating 3-mile guided walk through one of Sunderland's most historic landscapes. Starting at Elemore Park , once a bustling colliery and now a thriving green oasis, we'll explore how nature is reclaiming the land.
As we journey toward Hetton Lyons Country Park we will delve into the area's ancient roots, its coal mining legacy and its pivotal role in the birth of the railways. Follow in the footsteps of George Stephenson along the route of the Hetton Colliery Railway - the world's first built for steam haulage.
We will stop at Easington Lane Community Access Point (ELCAP) to view their outstanding historic archive, plus enjoying some light refreshments before continuing on.
The walk finishes at Hetton Lyons Country Park - once home to another colliery and the location of a striking steam engine sculpture that commemorates the area's industrial heritage.
Transport back to Elemore Park will be provided.

Directions:
We meet in the main car park. Elemore Park lies about half a mile on the road out of Easington Lane on the way to Pittington. Used to be an old golf course, known as "the golfie".

Accessibility details

Toilets available at ELCAP and Hetton Lyons Country Park. The walk uses good footpaths but will take in some grassy areas that may be muddy and uneven after rain. Please wear good sturdy footwear.
