Within the Berwick Borough Archives, there are bundles of 19th century summonses served on people to appear at Court. What did they do and what was the outcome ? Follow the stories of some individuals summonsed in the 1880s.

In the 19th century there were two courts operating in Berwick to try criminal cases - Quarter Sessions and Petty Sessions. The Quarter Sessions met every 3 months and considered more serios cases whilst the Petty Sessions met weekly or more frequently. It was presided over by Justices of the Peace without a Jury and dealt with lesser crimes including drunkeness and wilful damage to property. These documents list the individuals who had to appear at Court and be sentenced or dismissed.
