Sunday Best Exhibition
Old Parcels Office, Railway Station Car Park, Westborough, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO11 1TU
From the arrival of the railway to the heyday of the seaside promenade, the exhibition explores how Scarborough became one of Britain's most fashionable resorts. Follow the story from the elegant spa visitors of the 18th century through the Victorian and Edwardian boom years, and on to the changing fashions of the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s.
Illustrated display panels reveal the history of grand department stores, seaside shopping, promenading, bathing costumes and the changing styles that holidaymakers proudly wore to be seen along Scarborough's famous Esplanade and seafront.
The exhibition also features costumes, shoes, and accessories, together with a fascinating collection of historic photographs that capture visitors enjoying the timeless tradition of dressing in their Sunday Best.
Whether you are interested in fashion, local history, railways or the evolution of the British seaside holiday, Sunday Best offers a nostalgic journey through more than 250 years of Scarborough's social history. It reveals how changing transport, technology and fashion transformed not only the clothes people wore, but also the way they spent their leisure time, helping to establish Scarborough as Britain's original and most popular seaside resort.
