In the autumn of 1830, agricultural workers in the south of England, fed up with increased costs of bread and reduced wages revolted in what have been come to be known as the Swing Riots.

The Havant, Emsworth, Warblington and Westbourne Swing Riot Research Group have been exploring the local events when rioters from the local area smashed threshing machines and demanded money, in some cases with menaces, from local tenant farmers and clergymen. They were later arrested and ended up at a Grand Assize in Winchester Great Hall in December 1830m from which some men were hung and others were transported to Australasia. This day commemorates those events and the local people involved in talks, song and drama and includes a small exhibition.
