Mass Redundancy in Tudor Times

This talk examines some of the impact of the Reformation on Hull and East Yorkshire. In the reign of Henry VIII, approximately 12,000 monks and nuns, and huge numbers of lay workers were made redundant. That’s approximately 1 in 25 of the whole population of England. By the time of Elizabeth I, ‘sturdy beggars’ were considered such a problem that a whole new system of dealing with poverty was needed.
