The history of Deal's piers
Astor Community Theatre, Stanhope Road, Deal, Kent, CT14 6AB
Deal was a key anchorage during the days of sail, despite having no harbour, so its piers were vital to the town.
The first pier was a wooden structure which was only used from 1840-60. Its successor was an iron pier which was in use between 1864-1940, before being destroyed in the war, and rebuilt in 1957 in a distinctive style. Other marine structures that were planned but never built will also be mentioned.
The talk will be given by National Piers Society archivist Martin Easdown and member Martyn Webster, who are the authors of the recent definitive book on the subject.
