A Heritage Open Days event presented byTavistock Local History Society

Tavistock Town Centre Burial Grounds Walk led by Tony Vigars meeting outside the Guildhall.

We know very little about the very beginnings of Tavistock before the establishment of Abbey in the late 900s. There is the site of a very early enclosure, called the Trendle, in the grounds of Mount Kelly School to the east and to the south there is a property called Walreddon – which means “community of the Welshmen” – these places indicate that there were Celtic settlements in the vicinity before the Romans
came to Britain. Go onto Dartmoor and there are numerous remains of enclosures, round houses and cairns where the dead were buried.

During this walk we will trace the history of Tavistock by where the dead have been buried over the past 1500 years.
