Lost buildings of Dover Western Heights fortifications

Dover’s “Western Heights” is well known as a fortress, with gun emplacements, magazines, ditches, and inevitably, “secret underground tunnels”! However, it was also home to a community of up to four thousand soldiers, civilians, women and children.

In this talk, I shall be describing some of the domestic buildings that existed within the Western Heights, focusing especially on the second half of the 19th century, and describing what life was like for those inhabitants. Although hardly any of these buildings now exist, I hope to explain how every facility that the community living here could possibly need was provided for. Along the way, I shall, hopefully, dispel a few myths and legends, too!

The talk will be illustrated with plenty of photographs and drawings of those lost buildings, including images of my own miniature recreation of some of them.
