Tenbury Wells Museum
Tenbury Wells Museum, Goff's School, Cross St, Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, WR15 8ef
Walking around the current town, all the centre of which is in a conservation area, the wide variety of architectural styles become obvious to the curious observer. The museum, itself is housed in a typical Victorian school dating from 1863, will also feature special displays from its extensive archival photographic collections of these buildings including ones that were demolished to facilitate better traffic flow. The town also boasts a Victorian workhouse as well as St Mary's Parish Church dating from the 12th century which was restored in the 19th century following severe flood damage. Access will be available to buildings not normally open.
Many of the buildings have unique features which are obvious either through their construction or through their original or current usage such as Longwater, a private house dating from 1681 which is of a unique construction of bricks over two feet in length.
Also, not to be missed, are the exotic gothic styled blue and white Victorian Spa Pump Rooms reminiscent of the Crystal Palace or the elaborate timber framed patterns on the 17th century Royal Oak Public House and the 'oval' Round Market are just three examples among many unique gems.
The 17th Century Dutch style of architecture is also apparent in Cornwall House (opposite to the museum), with its curved gable end and original leaded casements some of which show engraved initials and verses as 17th century 'graffiti '
