Thaxted Windmill more than a Restoration
The Guildhall, Town Street, Thaxted, Dunmow, Essex, CM6 2LD
Thaxted Tower Mill was built in 1804, in a Georgian era that spanned the years from 1714 to 1837. it was an era of great social, political and cultural changes. It includes the start of the Industrial revolution, the emergence of Romanticism in art and dominance of the British Empire through exploration and war. It saw Britain establish itself as an international power. Accelerating change from the 1770s onwards made it the world's first industrialised nation. it was also defined by an intense, anxious war against Napoleon's France, the rapid rise of early factories, and the stark divide between the rich and the poor. Life in rural Essex in 1804 was shaped by the grueling realities of intensive farming, highly structured social hierarchy, and the constant, looming fear of the French invasion across the nearby coastline. Essex was a vital agricultural powerhouse, focused heavily on growing wheat and barley to feed a rapidly expanding London market. Thaxted in 1804 was a quiet. modest agricultural market town in Essex. It shifted heavily to an agrarian economy supplying grain and flour locally and to London which John Webb a local farmer and businessman capitalised on with the building of a large brick built windmill to meet the demand.
