The Athenaeum, a Private Members club, founded in 1797, has been in Church Alley since 1928 is usually only available to members. HoDs provide the public with an opportunity to see and enjoy the ambience of this unique space and its famous Library.

Visitors will enjoy a tour of the premises occupied by the Institution sandwiched discreetly between Lush and Castle Fine Art in Church Alley. After assembling in the entrance Lobby with the historic maps of Liverpool displayed on the walls, the party (of no more than 20) will travel up to the top of the building to the Dining Room to see the impressive collection of Herdman pictures and then make their way down the famous elliptical staircase-the only one of its kind in Liverpool-to the Reading Room where a number of the rare works in the Library collections are on display. The tour concludes with a visit to the Newsroom which is the day to day home of Proprietors. Club merchandise is available to purchase as are light refreshments and a pay bar. Tours will take place on Sunday 21st September only from 10.15 am with last admission at 4.15 pm. Booking is essential.

Tours commence at 10.15 am and run every 45 minutes until 12.30 pm. Tours recommence at 2.00pm until 4.15 pm.

The building is not suitable for those under 14, or those who require wheelchair access. For those travelling by car, Q park, Hanover St is the nearest car park. Five minutes walk from the Athenaeum.
