An exhibition presenting the history and development of Harrogate’s Bilton Grange Estate, a period of almost 250 years from the 1778 Enclosure Award to the present day.

Harrogate’s Bilton Grange Estate, roughly bounded by Skipton Road, Bilton Lane, the Mere’s (or Mire’s) Lane public bridleway and Woodfield Road, was largely undeveloped until the start of the 20th century. In 1901, Harrogate Borough’s boundary was extended north-eastwards towards Old Bilton village and large tracts of farmland became available for development. Much of this land was bought by the Bilton Grange Estate Company from Nidd Hall’s Mountgarret family. This newly formed Company then divided the area into a large number of smaller plots which were then sold to builders. Construction took place in several phases over many years and was only completed in the late 1960s.

This often-overlooked part of Harrogate fulfilled an important role in supporting the town’s exploitation of its mineral waters, in the early part of the 20th century, by accommodating the necessary large workforce for its hotels and essential services.

Come along and see what Bilton Historical Society has discovered about the Bilton Grange Estate, its history and development, including its principal buildings, shops and businesses, as well as some of its families.
